Hurricane season has been in effect as of June 1st. Now is the time to be prepared! Proper storage and dockage for your boat is extremely important. No matter how attached you are are to your boat you should never under any circumstance, stay aboard during a hurricane. The best thing to do is to make arrangements to store your boat. When storing your boat during a hurricane, keep in mind the level of the storm and the sea level anticipated so you can know how high to store your boat. Another option is to moor your boat in a hurricane hole. These are deep and narrow coves surrounded by trees to block the strong winds. If these two options are not available, you can always store your boat at a marina or dock. But always make sure that the marina or dock offers reasonable shelter and is protected by a high sea wall. Use fenders to protect your boat from any collisions. Do not put excess fuel in your boat. Do not forget to automatically set your bilge pump and open cockpit drains. Shut and seal all openings such as hatches, windows, doors and vents with duct tape. Lastly, remember to cut off shore power to your boat.

Every year, boaters take to the ocean for recreational or commercial purposes, unaware of all the damage that is done on the ocean every day. Overfishing and marine pollution are some of the biggest problems jeopardizing the ocean ecosystems which we rely on for natural resources, climate control and other reasons. In January 2011, a commercial trawler in North Carolina accidentally netted around 4,000 Striped Bass. Due to fishing limits, the captain kept 50 Stripers and dumped the rest back into the ocean. While incidents like this are not often reported, there is reason to believe that overfishing is a common practice. Changes in fishing equipment and methods have also put a strain on our oceans. Fortunately, many activists such as the Pew Environment Group are working with the government and the National Marine Fisheries Service to put an end to overfishing and protect the ocean ecosystems. In the meantime, recreational and commercial boaters can help by increasing awareness of the situation and promoting environmental conservation.
With rising gas costs, many boat manufacturers are focused on fuel efficient models such as hybrid and electric boats. Some are also finding that buyers are more interested in smaller, lighter models. CraigCat and Chris-Craft are just two manufacturers that have utilized hybrid boat fuel systems. Chris-Craft is also developing a completely electric boat, as is popular ski boat manufacturer Ski Nautique. While hybrid and electric boats are not widely accessible right now, some believe that it is only a matter of a few years until they become widespread. Meanwhile, those manufacturers who are sticking to traditional boats are aimed towards more lightweight materials. Whether or not the boating industry follows the auto industry’s move towards greater fuel efficiency, it will be interesting to see where the industry is five years from now.
