Built in 1972 by the Marshall Boat Company, the Californian brand has had a long history of being acquired and improved by big names in the boating world. First established to create well-built trawlers—which was a tricky industry to break into at the time—Californian began buildings cruising boats that have earned a good reputation amongst boaters and industry leaders alike. Where the lower-priced Californian 34-foot Long Range Cruiser comes with the basics, (a comfortable salon and galley, two staterooms, twin 200 horsepower Perkins diesels, efficient heat and air conditioning, and walk-around decks), the more impressive, higher-priced Californian 55 LRC comes with a sleek, modern galley, lots of storage, an impressive master stateroom, fuel-efficient electronic Volvo diesel engines, and many other features that make the 55 LRC stand out in its class. Believed and communicated by owners to be well-built and seaworthy, Californian continues to be a name worth noting. In 1988, Jules Marshall, who first began the Californian Yachts business in 1972, re-acquired the Californian brand and continues to produce models bearing the name, “Navigator.”
