Started in 1963 by Andrew Vavolotis in East Taunton, Massachusetts, Dory Yachts quickly became known as the sailboat building experts. During the company’s 28 years in the manufacturing industry, Cape Dory Yachts built almost 3,000 sailboats. With a well-rounded fleet of boats ranging in length from 22 to 45 feet, these boats quickly garnered attention and grew in popularity. During the 1970s, Cape Dory Yachts began building powerboats for both the working and recreational industry—the most sought-after model being the Cape Dory 28. Still recognized as one of Cape Dory’s best, this boat affords more practical cruising features in one sleek design than any other yachts in her class. Popular features include the self-tending club footed jib to ease windward sailing, the bowsprit that includes an anchor roller, and the large Volvo Diesel that promotes safety and provides dependability. All things considered, the Dory 28 boasts easy handling and the flexibility of a small crew. Her standard features—including bronze opening ports, a lightning ground system, and bronze seacocks—according to Cape Dory boaters, “reflect the determination of Cape Dory to supply a cruising boat of the highest standards.” Though Cape Dory eventually closed its manufacturing doors, certain models are being built today on a special-order basis.
