Catalina Boats

Catalina Yachts was founded in 1969 by Frank Butler. According to Butler, Catalina Yachts aims to build strong, functional yachts with affordability in mind. New boat designs are based on older models with upgrades rather than completely new designs. This is how Catalina keeps production costs and prices lower than some of the competition. The first boat off the Catalina sailboat line was the Catalina 22. By 1975, 5,000 Catalina 22s are sold and two new models, the Catalina 27 and Catalina 30 are being built and sold. The Catalina sailboat yacht company continues to recreate successful boats year after year.

The Catalina Yachts company currently produces three sailboat yacht series - Sports, Cruiser and Ocean. The Sports series of sailboat comes in lengths between 8 and 25 feet. Cruiser sailboat yachts are a bit longer ranging from 28 feet to 37 feet. The longest boats produced by Catalina Yachts are the Ocean series measuring from 38 feet to 47 feet.

There are 10 total models in the Catalina Sports sailboat series. These are the Catalina 12.5 Expo, 14.2, 14.2 Expo, 16.5, 18, 22, 22mkII, 22Sport, 250mkII water ballast and 250mkII wing keel. The most affordable and easiest to use is the 12.5 Expo. The sailboat can be broken down by hand and is easily maneuvered by the smallest sailors. The 14.2 Expo is another easy to handle sailboat created for the new sailor or an expert that wants to spend some time on the water with less work. A freestanding mast and boom offers a spacious cockpit. This model sailboat is complete with a carbon fiber mast to decrease risk of tipping. The larger 250kmII series of Catalina sailboat is for experts only. An open cabin is available for guests but most of the deck is used for maneuvering the boat.

There are 14 models in the Catalina Cruiser and Ocean series. These models range in length from 28feet to 47 feet and require expert knowledge to handle on open waters. As boat length and size increases, more cabin room is available below deck. Larger models also tend to come with a standard galley, LP tank for cooking and additional sleeping quarters. The largest Catalina sailboat yacht, the Catalina 470 3 Cabin Ocean offers a master stateroom, galley, L- shaped lounge couch, chairs and ergonomic controls.

Specs include overall length, hull length, waterline length, beam, draft fin keel, draft wing keel,ballast wing keel, ballast fin keel, and engine specifications.
