Located in Bucyrus, Ohio, since 1963, Checkmate Boats Inc. is a maker of high performance racing boats and family runabout speedboats. Bill Combs originally began the company, and it is now led by Doug Smith. Checkmate continues to produce new models of boats to accommodate the lifestyles of their customers. A Checkmate boat may cost anywhere from $40,000 to over $100,000 and higher depending on the model and options chosen. Available models include the: Convincor 300; Convincor 2800 OBX; Convincor 270; Convincor 270br; ZT 350; ZT 280; ZT 275; ZT 260; ZT 244 ; ZT 240; ZT 230; ZT 230br; Pulsare 2400 BRX; Pulsare 2400; Pulsare 2100br; Pulsare 2100; Pulsare 2000; Pulsare 2000br; Pulsare 1850br; Pulsare 1600br; and SFX 250 . Checkmate warranties its boats against defects in workmanship and/or materials for 1 year from the date of purchase. The warranty is extended to 10 years on the hull and is non-transferable. Materials used in the construction of each boat include hand-laid fiberglass with a balsa core, an extra-thick stringer system, and marine-grade hardware. Custom painting and finishes are selected by the customer . Late model Checkmate boats can be restored by the company. Any boat built in 1983 or after can be completely remanufactured using original molds. Boats built before 1983 can be refitted with custom-made parts.
