Marshall Duffield was also attracted to the water. His father built golf courses and started several successful businesses in Newport Harbor, California. When Duffield grew tired of the family boat constantly breaking down, he grabbed some golf cart batteries and created his first electric boat. The batteries were manufactured by a fellow Newport Harbor resident who bought the first electric boat from the soon to be Duffy Electric Boat Company. Duffy boats are eco-friendly and zero emission. Each battery set takes approximately 12 hours to charge on a standard home plug. One charge will power the boat for up to 10 hours at cruising speeds of two or three mph. The Duffy Electric Boat series includes lengths from 14’ to 24’. All boats are powered with a Duffy exclusive rudder that allows even the largest boat to turn in circles on a dime. The newest Duffy model is the 16’ Back Bay. A remake of the 18’ Snug Harbor, this new model is smaller than the Harbor yet holds nine people comfortably. New Duffy boats can be purchased through licensed suppliers. Used Duffy’s vary in price but often fall in the $25,000 US to $35,000 US range.
