George Hinterhoeller owns a boat manufacturing company named after him. Moving to Canada in 1952, he was already an experienced boat builder. Once in Ontario, he worked building powerboats and began building his own sailboats in 1959. That year, he created the “Teeter Totter”, a 22-foot long sailboat made of plywood that was designed to sail quickly when the wind blew. Afterwards, he built his next model, the Shark 24, which was basically the Teeter Totter, though two feet longer. Initially the boats were built from plywood, but as the company grew and became more popular, plywood gave way to fiberglass. After ten years, Hinterhoeller merged his company with Belleville Marine Yard and Bruckmann Manufacturing. He then collaborated on designs with George Cuthbertson and George Cassian and developed the C & C Yacht Company. The Shark 24 was then produced by the C&C Company and they also developed the well-known C&C 27. In 1976, Hinterhoeller left the company and reestablished Hinterheoller Yachts. He developed the "Nonsuch", a catboat series. There are about 1,000 Nonsuch models in existence today, and 2500 Shark models--The most popular Hinterhoeller Yachts model-- in the Great Lakes area. |
