Up until the mid 1980s, Islander Boats produced sailboats until it ceased its operations. Islander Boats is best known for its line of classic sailboats and yachts. Its most popular model was its 36 foot long sloop called the I-36. This model was the result of the collaboratory efforts of Alan Gurney and Joe Artese, with Gurney designing the hull and rig and Artese styling the interior, cockpit and the interior. It was a high-end sailboat and its interiors were furnished with a teak and holly cabin floor. The vessel’s ventilation was provided by two overhead hatches and six cabin ports. The cabin was also fitted with four non-opening side windows that offered enhanced visibility and lighting. Designed like most other single-mast yachts, it had a mainsail and a foresail, and the cockpit was located towards the back. It was inboard powered and a great choice for weekend and short trips. It was ultimately seen as a moderately priced, but well-built and dependable boats that could handle the roughest of seas. The I-36 was chosen as one of the World’s Twenty Best Boats by Cruising World Magazine.
