Back in 1960, a little company in Buford, Georgia, began producing unique river and lake boats that were more like homes than sport boats. The company, Lazy Days, was soon to be referred to as the “Cadillac of Houseboats.” Eventually, the company changed hands, moved to Kentucky, and went through a series of name changes before finally being retired in the late ‘90s. Before the company folded, one crucial design change revolutionized houseboat hulls, and many other boat hulls for that matter. Jack Hargrave, a naval architect, took a page from aluminum foil’s book and designed a houseboat hull made out of aluminum. Ever since, Lazy Days has had a reputation as a game-changer. Today, one can still purchase pre-owned Lazy Days houseboats from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and‘90s. Drastically ranging in price, a 1979 60' Lazy Days High Bow goes for $94,900, while a 1988 68' Lazy Days is $290,000. One can go back as far as a 1971 for a 53' Lazy Days, which can be bought for $45,000. Darlene Meyer, of Gilbertsville, KY, says of her ’79 60’ Lazy Days High Bow, “We’ve had this boat for over two decades. It’s our home. It’s in the same condition as when we bought it, and it only seems to get more comfortable with age.” |
