About Boat AIS Antennas
AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a short range tracking system that is usually used by the coastal areas to track vessels and for identifying local vessels electronically by the exchange of data with other ships that are nearby. According to sources, the AIS systems are similar to marine radar in the sense that they are used to monitor the presence of other ships and vessels in the area and provide some level of collision avoidance, but it cannot substitute marine radar.
The AIS antenna is not installed in all ships and boats and hence it cannot be used as the primary technique for collision avoidance. There are many kinds of tracking devices (sonar, radar, etc) just like there are many kinds of

There are many kinds of tracking devices (sonar, radar, etc) just like there are many kinds of
boat anchors (PWC anchors, river anchors, navy anchors, etc)and different kinds of
boat paint (boat bottom paint, boat top paint, etc), different kinds of
boat lights (boat navigation lights, boat floodlights, boat searchlights, etc) etc.
Each kind of tracking device or sensor has its own advantages and disadvantages. Sources say that the marine radar is the device that is used the most in boats and ships and almost every vessel comes equipped with marine radar.
In some cases, the AIS is even used for search and rescue missions. In any of the search and rescue missions, the position of the person or the boat that needs help is critical and the AIS can provide some additional help in these cases. The AIS may work only on the VHF frequency, but in emergencies, it can prove to be quite useful.
