Mr. Ambrose Weeres designed and developed the first pontoon boat in 1952 in Richmond, Minnesota. He developed the pontoon as he was searching for an alternative to lake fishing boats that would be more stable. Mr. Weeres plan was to place a solid deck on top of two drums that were welded together on the ends. This design was successful and the pontoon industry began. Today, the pontoon boat is used primarily for recreational activities and is also known as a party boat. Most manufacturers offer many models, sizes, designs, layouts, and colors; however, the average length of a pontoon boat is 20 feet with a capacity of 15 people. Smaller manufacturers allow the customer to personalize the pontoon boat and even build the pontoon as a custom order to meet the specific needs of the customer. Used pontoon boats begin at about $15,900 for a 25 foot 2001 Special Edition Grand Isle by Crest or $13,900 for a 24 foot 2005 pontoon by Bentley. Specific pricing for new pontoon boats is available by contacting a pontoon dealership. New pontoons prices begin at around $40,000 for a 25 foot 2010 Aloha paradise Series 250 by Aloha Yachts. Weeres Industries, Aloha Yachts, Bentley, and G are popular manufacturers of pontoon boats.
