Summary
When you’re preparing for a great day on the water, you always want to be well prepared with what you wear. But what about accessories?
The problem with boating accessories is that people forget to plan ahead. Part way through the day, they begin wishing that they had brought something, or at the end of a great day, they realize that something they thoughtlessly brought with them has been damaged by the water. Be sure to plan ahead in these smaller details so that your day out isn’t ruined.
Pros
- One of the best boating accessories is a waterproof case. Many of these can be hooked onto your belt or kept in a pocket. This can feasibly be a simple solution to all of your accessory needs.
- The most common and basic accessory for boating is a watch. Most watches claim to be water resistant, but unfortunately, that does not mean they can endure even a little spray. You can find genuinely waterproof watches at a good watch store or online. The key here is to notice the depth to which it is waterproof.
- Another major issue is wallets. You don’t want a gummy mess of papers because you were unexpectedly caught in rain or a hit by a big wave. Of course, one option is to leave your watch at home, but often you may need your money or driver’s license. There are a few waterproof wallets available, or you could seal it in a waterproof case.
- One other pricey item that can get ruined is a cell phone. The problem is that it’s usually a very good idea to have a phone available in case you have problems. If you’re shopping for a new phone, consider one of the few waterproof models. Otherwise, you can put it in a waterproof case with your wallet.
- A very helpful accessory is a bottle of sunscreen that you can hook onto your belt or somewhere on the boat. These bottles are small, but it’s great to have something with you whenever you need it.
Cons
- Many boaters feel more comfortable if they don’t have to carry items with them. It’s very nice, for instance, to be ready to jump into the water for a quick swim without worrying about all the items you might be carrying.
- Another risk is that something might get lost. If a waterproof bag with your wallet, keys, and phone goes overboard, for instance, you’re in big trouble. Make sure that anything you carry is well secured.

Conclusion
It is far too easy to hit the water without thinking about accessories or protecting what you own, but the inconvenience is worth it. If you plan ahead and buy a few special items, you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
